HC Deb 11 June 1956 vol 554 cc9-10
12. Mr. Moss

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power the loss to the National Coal Board per ton of coal currently imported; and how this compares with the loss per ton imported during 1955.

The Minister of Fuel and Power (Mr. Aubrey Jones)

During the first quarter of 1956, the average cost of supplying imported coal was about 70s. per ton more than the proceeds of resale. The comparable extra cost for the year 1955 was about 48s. per ton. The difference is due mainly to higher prices and freight rates.

Mr. Moss

Can the right hon. Gentleman add to his reply by estimating the total loss in which the National Coal Board will be involved during 1956?

Mr. Jones

That is a different question, which I could not answer without notice.
