HC Deb 26 July 1956 vol 557 cc624-5
35. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that funds collected for alleged aid to dependants of imprisoned Cypriots have not in fact left this country; and whether he will investigate the matter with a view to taking action against anyone who has obtained money by false pretences, and returning the money to the donors.

The Secretary of State for the Home Department and Minister for Welsh Affairs (Major Gwilym Lloyd-George)

I am informed by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the police have no evidence which would justify proceedings against any person for obtaining money by false pretence for this purpose.

Mr. Jeger

Is the Home Secretary not aware of the statement that was made in this House that the money collected for this purpose had not left the country? Can he enlighten the House about what has happened to it, and whether it is to be used for subversive propaganda objects other than that for which it was supposed to have been collected?

Major Lloyd-George

If the hon. Gentleman has any information on that matter, I shall be glad to have it. He probably is aware that there is no restriction on the transfer of money to Cyprus. I have no power whatever to order accounts to be produced.
