HC Deb 25 July 1956 vol 557 c392
35. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he will experiment with one-way working in Cavendish Square, W.1.

Mr. Molson

The treatment of Cavendish Square is bound up with traffic arrangements at Oxford Circus. As a temporary diversion during road works in Regent Street, a number of one-way streets are very shortly to be tried in this area, and these will include the east and west sides of Cavendish Square. The results of those diversions will be carefully watched.

Mr. Russell

Will my right hon. Friend also consider the south side of Cavendish Square? Is he aware that at the junction of the Square with Holles Street there is sometimes a most appalling jam, because of the traffic trying to go three ways at once? Will he look into conditions on that side of the Square?

Mr. Molson

I shall certainly look into this matter at the time the experiment is being made, but we have considered this matter in the past and we thought that, on balance, it would not be desirable to introduce one-way traffic there.
