HC Deb 19 July 1956 vol 556 c1364
20. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is aware of the damage caused to growing tomatoes in the Lea Valley by hormone spraying in neighbouring fields; and what action he proposes to take to prevent its recurrence.

Mr. Amory

I am aware that there have been several cases of damage to tomato crops by spray drift in the Lea Valley. As I informed my hon. Friend the Member for Maldon (Mr. B. Harrison) on 18th June, the need for care in spraying is being emphasised by my advisory officers. I will consider in consultation with the organisations interested what further publicity might be undertaken for the future.

Mr. Jeger

I thank the Minister for his promise to consider this matter, but does he realise that this practice involves some of the tomato growers in a great financial loss, which some of the smaller ones can ill afford, and that the trouble might be prevented by a scheme of notification to neighbours before spraying commences?

Mr. Amory

I realise the importance of the point which the hon. Gentleman has raised. Very heavy damage can result, and I will bear in mind the suggestion which he has made.
