HC Deb 17 July 1956 vol 556 c1013
4. Mr. Anthony Greenwood

asked the Minister of Works what arrangements he is making for the unveiling of the memorial to the late Field-Marshal Smuts.

Mr. Buchan-Hepburn

It is proposed that a statue to Field-Marshal Smuts, which is to be placed in Parliament Square, should be unveiled by the right hon. Gentleman the Member for Woodford (Sir W. Churchill) on 7th November, 1956.

In addition to Members of both Houses of Parliament, guests to be invited to the unveiling ceremony will include Cabinet colleagues of the Field-Marshal, representatives of the Commonwealth, representatives of bodies with which the Field-Marshal was associated, such as Cambridge University, representatives of the Services, etc.

Mr. Greenwood

Is the Minister aware that the House will welcome the unveiling of this monument to a man who was a great friend of this country and a great enemy of racial discrimination?

Mr. Buchan-Hepburn

Yes.
