HC Deb 17 July 1956 vol 556 c1040
61. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Labour what consideration has been given to the possibility of suspending the call-up in medical and other categories other than those in which the call-up of National Service men is already suspended.

Mr. Carr

The arrangements for suspension of call-up are continuously under review in the light of the competing calls on the manpower resources of the country.

Mr. Sorensen

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that that does not give very much information? Can he indicate whether there are categories under consideration with a view to abolishing the call-up altogether?

Mr. Carr

As I said, it is difficult to give categorical information because this matter is always under review. Only recently there have been one or two extensions as, for example, agricultural contractors and the stopping of the call-up of medical category III. It is under constant review, and I cannot say more than that.
