HC Deb 17 July 1956 vol 556 c1026
31. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the President of the Board of Trade what quantities of tomatoes have been imported from Bulgaria this year.

Mr. Low

No fresh tomatoes, 197 cwt. of tomato puree, and 524 cwt. of other canned tomatoes in the first five months of this year.

Mr. Jeger

Does the right hon. Gentleman think that the best form of East-West trade which can be devised is to export valuable machinery to Bulgaria in return for which we get tomatoes, often in cans or bottles, at a time when our own tomato crop is coming on the market and almost a glut is resulting?

Mr. Low

Trade is a two-way matter, and some facilities—the House will know they are restrictive facilities—are given to countries in Eastern Europe for this sort of thing, including Bulgaria.
