HC Deb 17 July 1956 vol 556 c1015
7. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for War what building or buildings in or about London are being used as an assembly centre for Her Majesty's troops since the Goodge Street Underground Station, which was formerly used for that purpose, was destroyed by fire; and if he will indicate the accommodation and amenities now available to such troops, together with the means of ingress and egress thereto and therefrom, and precautions against danger by fire there.

The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Antony Head)

As a temporary arrangement, part of the Royal Artillery Depot at Woolwich is being used. There is accommodation for 275 soldiers who have access to all amenities at the Depot. The means of escape in case of fire are adequate.

Mr. Hughes

Does the Secretary of State agree that soldiers in transit should be put in well-ventilated and healthy centres? Was not the Goodge Street episode a shocking example to the contrary? Will he take steps to ensure that it is not repeated?

Mr. Head

I have always agreed about that. The problem is to find somewhere in Central London suitable for this purpose.
