HC Deb 12 July 1956 vol 556 c590
53. Mr. Anthony Greenwood

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department by what methods the West End division of the Metropolitan police force has been brought up to strength.

Major Lloyd-George

"C" division, which is generally known as the West End division, has been brought up to strength by the gradual posting during recent months of recruits from the training schools and the transfer on 2nd July of 30 constables who had previously been on loan to the division from neighbouring divisions.

Mr. Greenwood

Can the Home Secretary assure the House that the division has not been brought up to strength by drafting men to it from other parts of London where gangs are known to be operating?

Major Lloyd-George

I do not think so. It is within the Commissioner's discretion to use this force to the best possible advantage, and he has directed the men to this division. I see no evidence at all that this has had any effect upon other parts of London.
