HC Deb 10 July 1956 vol 556 c180
14. Mr. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the estimated saving expected from the proposed increases in the prices of school meals.

Mr. J. Stuart

The annual saving expected in expenditure on school meals is £230,000.

Mr. Hamilton

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Report of the Royal Commission on the Taxation of Profits and Income, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and all informed opinion contends that the people most in need of help today are those with families of small children? How does the right hon. Gentleman reconcile that with the policy of increasing the price of school meals?

Mr. Stuart

It is precisely the policy which was followed by the Government of the party of the hon. Member before the present Government, that is, to charge the price of the food.
