HC Deb 05 July 1956 vol 555 cc1523-4
28. Mr. Lewis

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will publish in HANSARD a list of the persons employed in his Department who have to meet the cost of their postage, secretarial expenses, telephone charges, living away from home, and all other expenses wholly and necessarily incurred in carrying out their duties on behalf of his Department from their State salary.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

There are none, Sir.

Mr. Lewis

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that that is the reply I anticipated? Is he further aware that I am very pleased that he does not treat his staff as shabbily as the Chancellor of the Exchequer treats Members of Parliament?

Mr. Thorneycroft

So far as I am aware, I am the only person in the Department who has secretarial expenses and telephone charges and has not the advantage extended to Members of Parliament of being able to charge them against my Income Tax.
