HC Deb 03 July 1956 vol 555 cc1138-9
18. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Labour to make a statement on the present level of employment in South Wales; and his estimate of future prospects.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The estimated number of employees in civil employment in the Counties of Brecon, Carmarthen, Glamorgan, Monmouth and Pembroke was approximately 700,000 in June, 1956, while the number unemployed on 11th June was about 13,500. There has been a slight increase in unemployment in recent months, but the general employment position is good and there seems no reason to expect any substantial change in the future.
