HC Deb 03 July 1956 vol 555 cc1150-1
39. Miss Herbison

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when he proposes to improve the facilities for examining the eyesight of children in schools.

Mr. J. N. Browne

While my right hon. Friend does not accept that these facilities are generally inadequate he is seeking, in consultation with the education authorities, to assess the practicability and value of testing the eyesight of children at an earlier age than at present adopted.

Miss Herbison

Would the hon. Gentleman not consider carrying out the recommendations that have been made to him by opticians in Scotland? Is he aware that there are many people who through school sight-testing were never found to need spectacles and yet were in great need of them? Would the hon. Gentleman give some consideration to the recommendations made to him?

Mr. Browne

Yes, indeed. These matters are under active consideration.
