HC Deb 03 July 1956 vol 555 cc1141-2
26. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of accidents which have occurred at the junction of Kilmarnock Road and Merrylee and Netherauldhouse Roads in Glasgow during the last five years, and the number of people who as a result have been killed or injured.

Mr. Henderson Stewart

Figures for the last five years are not readily available, but my right hon. Friend understands that from 1st January, 1953, to 31st May last, 43 accidents occurred at this junction, seven of which involved personal injury to 14 people.

Mr. Rankin

The Minister did not say how many were killed. Is he aware that I live very near that area? Kilmarnock Road is one of the really dangerous roads in Glasgow, and accidents, as I have witnessed, arise mostly from the undue speed of motorists travelling along that road. Will the Minister take steps to ensure that, for a period at least, a special watch is put on this area?

Mr. Stewart

Glasgow Corporation, of course, knows about this and has a responsibility. I think that the best answer I can give the hon. Member is that we shall gladly assist in any investigation which Glasgow Town Council may wish to make, such as the hon. Member suggests.
