HC Deb 03 July 1956 vol 555 cc1149-50
35. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware of the concern of Scottish potato growers over recent imports of new potatoes from Cyprus; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. N. Macpherson

My right hon. Friend is aware that there is some concern in Scotland regarding imports of potatoes from Cyprus due in the main to their somewhat later arrival than usual. Another factor is that according to information at present available production of new potatoes in Scotland has been higher than last year.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Minister aware that Ayrshire potato growers have lost £500,000 in ten days? Is he aware that the troubles caused in Cyprus were due to a curfew in Cyprus? What reason can the hon. Gentleman give for inflicting collective punishment on Ayrshire farmers as well as in Cyprus?

Answer.

Mr. Hughes

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the matter on the Adjournment.
