§ 24. Sir J. Hutchisonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether his attention has been drawn to the proposed demolition of the Peel of Drumry; and whether he will take steps to prevent the demolishing of this historic building.
§ Mr. J. N. BrowneThe attention of my right hon. Friend has been drawn to the proposed demolition. The Historic Buildings Council for Scotland has just advised him that the tower comes within the category of a building of special architectural or historic interest but that it is of local rather than of national importance. He proposes to take up with Glasgow Corporation the possibility of retaining the tower as a feature of their development scheme for the area.
§ Sir J. HutchisonWill my hon. Friend and his right hon. Friend realise that, although this building is perhaps not in the first category of importance, it is nevertheless the only building of any historic interest which is completely surrounded by a new housing scheme and is invested with a special importance on that account?
§ Mr. BrowneYes, Sir.
§ Mr. RankinWill the Secretary of State assure me that this decision will not prevent the demolition of many of the historic buildings in my area?
§ Mr. BrowneI should like notice of that question.
