§ 56. Mr. C. Pannellasked the President of the Board of Trade to state the volume of exports of motor cars to the United States of America for the years 1951 until the last available return, expressed as a percentage of British production.
§ The Minister of State, Board of Trade (Mr. A. R. W. Low)The number of cars exported to the United States between 1951 and May, 1956, was about 4 per cent. of the total number produced in that period.
§ Mr. PannellWill the right hon. Gentleman look at the figures again? My computation shows a diminution with each year.
§ Mr. LowI have given the hon. Gentleman the average over the whole period, which is what I thought he required. If he would like the figures broken down, I am certainly prepared to do that. I am not trying to say that the figures have remained constant throughout; they have not. This year, although they are higher than they were last year, they are, I understand, as a percentage of production, below what they were in 1951.
§ Mr. PannellIt is a misleading reply.
