§ 10. Mr. Emrys Hughesasked the Minister of Labour how many agricultural workers were called up for National Service in Scotland in 1955.
§ Mr. Iain MacleodIn 1955, 815 men were called up under the National Service Acts from agriculture in Scotland.
§ Mr. HughesIs the Minister aware that last year the labour force in Scotland declined by over 4,000, and that official figures show that one-third of the people who are called up never return to the land in Scotland? Does he not think it is time to face these facts?
§ Mr. MacleodYes; but of course a very substantial number are deferred, as I am sure the hon. Gentleman knows, 1131 and a figure of 815 called up from agriculture does not seem to me to be an unduly large one.
