HC Deb 29 February 1956 vol 549 cc1162-3
32. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies for what reason the Gold Coast Government has withdrawn the annual grant of £43,000 to the Extra-Mural Department of the Gold Coast University.

Mr. Hare

The Gold Coast Government have decided that the Extra-Mural Department of the University College of the Gold Coast shall in future be directly administered by the college. It is hoped that this will make for greater efficiency and economy.

Mr. Sorensen

Is that the only reason, or is there a political reason behind it?

Mr. Hare

This, of course, is a matter for the Gold Coast Government to decide. It was their decision. I think that it was felt that it would be more in the interests of economy and efficiency and general policy if the new arrangements were undertaken. It was their decision and I do not think that it is for us to comment, although I am quite prepared to pass any comments which the hon. Member may have to the Gold Coast Government.
