HC Deb 29 February 1956 vol 549 c1156
8. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the Director of Education for the Gambia has recently resigned; and what changes are proposed for the educational system of the Gambia Protectorate.

Mr. Hare

My right hon. Friend is aware that the Director of Education for the Gambia has tendered his resignation, but it has not yet been accepted. This and certain changes proposed in the educational system are matters which I hope to discuss with the Governor during my forthcoming visit.

Mr. Johnson

Whilst welcoming that Answer, and the fact that the Minister is going to Gambia—I am sure Mr. Garba Jahumpa will be glad to see him when he gets there—may I ask if the right hon. Gentleman will assure the House that nothing will happen to mar the future of the Yundum Teachers Training College? Will he see that sufficient young men of the Protectorate coming out of the college become teachers and go back to help their own people?

Mr. Hare

I have listened to what the hon. Member has said, but as I am going to the Colony I should prefer to form my own conclusions.
