HC Deb 29 February 1956 vol 549 c1161
6. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the effect on the local populace of the closing of the Taquah and Abosso Mine in the Gold Coast; and what arrangements have been made for taking over various welfare facilities formerly operated by this company.

Mr. Hare

Services to the township of Abosso provided from the mine will no longer be available. The Gold Coast Government are taking steps to ensure that hospital, water and drainage services continue.

Mr. Tilney

Is my right hon. Friend aware that but for the prolonged strike what was a fairly flourishing community would not be reverting, as it now is, to a bush economy? Would friends of this House in the Gold Coast realise that such things militate against capital investment, not only in the Gold Coast but throughout West Africa?

Mr. Hare

My only comment to my hon. Friend is that I think it was a pity that there was no decision to go back to work prior to the publication of the findings of the reporting commission.
