§ 22. Mr. J. Harveyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has any statement to make concerning the improvement of the conditions of service of school crossing patrols in the Metropolitan Police district, with particular reference to holidays with pay and payment of a retaining fee during school holidays.
§ Major Lloyd-GeorgeI understand that the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, who is the responsible authority under the School Crossing Patrols Act, 1953, is arranging a further meeting with the unions to discuss this claim; and, in the circumstances, I cannot make any comment on it.
§ Mr. HarveyIs my right hon. and gallant Friend aware that most of the people engaged on this work are old-age 564 pensioners, and that there is a feeling of resentment among them that conditions of labour are being enforced which would not be enforced on younger men?
§ Major Lloyd-GeorgeThe point is that at the moment this matter is under discussion and I do not think it would be wise for me to comment on it.
