HC Deb 23 February 1956 vol 549 cc539-40
1. Mr. D. Price

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in the light of the railways modernisation scheme, he will make a statement on his proposals to meet the future manpower needs of British Railways.

The Minister of Labour and National Service (Mr. Iain Macleod)

My officers are in close touch with the British Transport Commission, and will continue to give British Railways every possible help towards meeting its manpower requirements.

Mr. Price

Will my right hon. Friend bear in mind that this problem requires particularly close attention, in view of the fact that, traditionally, one of the attractions of employment on the railways has been security of tenure, which has rather offset the low level of remuneration?

Mr. Macleod

Yes, certainly. We have been in touch with the British Transport Commission for a number of months already over its future needs, in particular for professional and technical staffs.

Mr. Ernest Davies

In view of the concern among the railwaymen about the future of the railway workshops, will the Minister give an assurance that his officers will consult fully the trade union when his consultations take place?

Mr. Macleod

Yes, Sir; I am sure we will, but the next Question on the subject does indicate that there is no anxiety for some years ahead.
