HC Deb 21 February 1956 vol 549 cc191-2
42. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if the Water Pollution Research Laboratory has yet completed its survey of conditions in the River Thames; and if he will make a statement as to what action is to be taken to improve conditions in Erith and district.

Mr. Powell

The laboratory has still to complete its calculations. As regards the second part of the Question, my right hon. Friend has nothing to add at present to the statements made in the House before Christmas.

Mr. Dodds

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that trades councils on both sides of the river are to hold an important meeting on this subject in two weeks' time? Can we have more information on this matter before that meeting, as people are fed up with the state of the Thames?

Mr. Powell

It is desirable that the scientific information required by the Committee should properly be collected and assessed.

Mr. Gibson

In view of the importance of this matter, may we take it that the capital expenditure which is necessary effectively to rebuild the outfall works of London at Erith and other places will continue, so that we can be sure of getting a clean river?

Mr. Powell

Oh, yes; London County Council outfall works have a very important bearing on this matter, and are going ahead without any let or hindrance.
