HC Deb 21 February 1956 vol 549 cc172-3
9. Mr. Roberts

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received during the last six months from taxpayers urging a reduction in Government spending.

Mr. H. Macmillan

I can only say that I have received a large number of such representations, and that I have every reason to hope that a high proportion of my correspondents pay taxes.

Mr. Roberts

Does not the right hon. Gentleman agree that some of the people who are pressing the Chancellor for these changes are those who shouted from the rooftops for the Government to sweep away controls, and are now dissipating their energies or money abroad or sailing in yachts?

Mr. Macmillan

The hon. Gentleman has made his point. I do not suppose he would expect me to add anything.
