HC Deb 20 February 1956 vol 549 c23
35. Mr. B. Harrison

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when he expects the revision of the 1/2500 Ordnance Survey map of Essex to be completed; and what method is used to determine the correct names for watercourses.

Mr. Amory

About a quarter of the survey work has been completed and it is hoped that a further 25 per cent. will be done by 1960: but it is not yet possible to say when the work will be finished.

The names of watercourses which are not in any particular ownership are those used locally as ascertained from responsible persons of long residence in the neighbourhood or from societies or bodies of standing who are concerned with place names. The names of watercourses which are owned or administered by local authorities, nationalised industries or private persons are obtained from and vouched for by the owners or administrators.

Mr. Harrison

While thanking the Minister for that reply may I ask him if he would get his Department to look, in particular, into the naming of the two important rivers, the Chelmer and the Blackwater, at their mouths, because, according to the Ordnance Survey, they seem to change their names with every mile they go?

Mr. Amory

I will certainly go into that point with the Ordnance Survey Department.
