HC Deb 07 February 1956 vol 548 c1497
40. Mr. Grimond

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will now raise the exemption limit below which Purchase Tax is not payable on handcraft production.

Mr. H. Macmillan

I would refer the hon. Member to the full explanation given by my predecessor, in the debate on Report of the Finance Bill on 8th December last, of the reasons why we cannot accept this suggestion.

Mr. Grimond

Did not the right hon. Gentleman's predecessor indicate that he might look at the matter again? Is it not a case that the right hon. Gentleman has received further representations about it? While not asking him to anticipate his Budget, may I ask whether he will not give this matter favourable consideration?

Mr. Macmillan

I will certainly look at anything helpful if the hon. Member would care to see me on the matter. I am very anxious to see whether we can arrive at a workable scheme.
