HC Deb 06 December 1956 vol 561 c1423
8. Mr. de Freitas

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is aware that his graders in bacon factories measure the length of pig carcases while the carcases are hanging; that for progeny testing the length of the carcase is measured while the carcases are lying flat on a table; that there is often a difference of one inch between the hanging and lying lengths of the same carcase; and whether, in the interests of simplicity and of the pig industry generally, he will introduce one standard system of measuring.

Mr. Amory

Yes, Sir; we are consulting with the National Pig Progeny Testing Board to ensure that when, national testing starts comparable length measurements are obtained from both sources.

Mr. de Freitas

The Minister refers to "comparable length measurements." Will he not ask the progeny testers to conform to the hanging standard?

Mr. Amory

The question under consideration at present is what will be the best ultimate method. I agree with the hon. Member that, as things are at present, there is a risk of confusion.
