HC Deb 05 December 1956 vol 561 cc1227-8
22. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what plans have been devised or are under consideration to take advantage of the months when motor traffic will be reduced because of petrol restrictions to accelerate work on much-needed road improvement schemes.

Mr. Watkinson

While I am sure that highway authorities and contractors will take as much advantage as they can of the lessening of traffic to speed up work on road improvements, the effects of restrictions on fuel supplies will be felt by them as well as by the road materials industry, in common with other industrial consumers.

Mr. Dodds

I thank the Minister for that Answer, but is it not now obvious that the present roads will be more than adequate for the available motor traffic, if this Government stay in power much longer?
