HC Deb 03 December 1956 vol 561 cc869-70
37. Mr. Palmer

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what discussions he has had with the Central Electricity Authority about the possibility of greatly enlarging the present construction programme for nuclear power stations.

48. Mr. Mason

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power to what extent the atomic energy programme as envisaged in the Government White Paper is now out of date; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Aubrey Jones

I am in close touch with the Central Electricity Authority on this matter, and I will inform the House of the outcome as soon as I am able.

Mr. Palmer

In view of the weakness of the country's energy position revealed by the Middle East crisis and the restriction of our oil supplies, would the right hon. Gentleman not agree that there is urgent need for very quick action in this matter?

Mr. Jones

Yes, Sir: I fully accept that. I have already indicated that I fully accept the need for an enlarged nuclear power programme. As soon as I am able to do so, I will make a statement to the House.

Mr. Hobson

Will the Minister state the cost per kilowatt-hour from the nuclear power station at Calder Hall, in view of the fact that this information is being refused?

Mr. Jones

That does not arise out of this Question.
