HC Deb 02 August 1956 vol 557 cc1565-6
6. Mr. Albu

asked the Minister of Labour how many persons have been suspended from work during this year in the Tottenham—Edmonton area due to flooding.

Mr. Carr

There is no record in the Tottenham Employment Exchange of any unemployment this year due to flooding.

Mr. Albu

Is the hon. Member aware that every year very large numbers of man-hours are lost in the Tottenham—Edmonton area due to flooding? What reply has his right hon. Friend given to the document which he received from the Chairman of the North London Productivity Council on this matter?

Mr. Carr

I am afraid that, without notice, I cannot answer the last part of the hon. Member's question. We know from local reports that some time was lost, for example, during July this year, owing to this cause. As my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food told the hon. Member on 19th July, the Lee Conservancy Board was aware of the urgency of the drainage scheme and the first section of the plan was in hand.
