§ 42. Mr. Russellasked the President of the Board of Trade why the duty-free entry of maize was bound at the recent tariff negotiations at Geneva in view of the fact that it was already bound by the combined effect of the Ottawa Agreements Act and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.
§ Mr. P. ThorneycroftWe agreed to bind under the G.A.T.T. the existing duty-free entry for foreign maize in response to a request for this which was made in the course of the negotiations.
§ Mr. RussellDoes not this make it still more difficult at any time in the future for us to give encouragement to the growing of maize in the Commonwealth, thus saving dollars by getting rid of these international complications?
§ Mr. ThorneycroftIt would seem to me to make very little difference, as it was effectively bound already.
