§ 18. Miss Burtonasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is aware that food prices rose by about 7½ per cent. between the middle of December, 1954, and the middle of December, 1955; and if he will give the percentage increase or decrease from the middle of December, 1955, to the latest possible date in the price of those foods which he controls.
Mr. AmoryYes, Sir. Bread and milk are now the only foods whose prices I control. Since December, the price of National bread has risen by 13 per cent. as a result of reduction in the subsidy on 26th February. The price of ordinary milk has not changed.
§ Miss BurtonAs a past Minister of Pensions, will the Minister draw the attention of the other Members of the Cabinet to the cartoon in today's Daily Mirror concerning the plight of old-age pensioners and persuade the Cabinet to do something about it?
Mr. AmoryI think that the improvements made in the lot of old-age pensioners recently have been of very great assistance and have put the old-age pensioner into the most favourable position he or she has been in for many years.
