HC Deb 23 April 1956 vol 551 cc1422-3
4. Major Anstruther-Gray

asked the Minister of Supply the policy of his Department with regard to the employment of male nurses.

Mr. Maudling

Nurses engaged at our establishments, all of which employ mixed staffs, have to be in a position to treat employees of either sex. Male nurses are not employed as there may be difficulties involved in their treating women patients without some other person present, which it is not always possible to arrange.

Major Anstruther-Gray

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the Society of Male Nurses feels that there has been discrimination against its members in this matter? Is he prepared to look into the matter again?

Mr. Maudling

Certainly. I understand that this is a fairly general practice, but I am not entirely satisfied that it is justified and I will gladly look at it again.
