HC Deb 19 April 1956 vol 551 c1162
28. Mr. Hyde

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to recover the painting which was recently stolen from the Lane collection in the Tate Gallery.

Mr. Deedes

The picture has been returned to the Gallery.

Mr. Hyde

While everyone is very glad that the picture has been returned to the Gallery, is my hon. Friend aware that there is an overwhelming mass of public opinion in both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, regardless of political party, which believes that the picture and the thirty-eight other pictures in the Lane collection rightfully belong to Ireland, on moral, if not on strictly legal, grounds—

Mr. Speaker

Order. That does not arise on this Question. The hon. Gentleman asked about steps to recover a painting which is now back in its proper place.
