HC Deb 19 April 1956 vol 551 cc1156-7
17. Mr. Hayman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to improve the unsatisfactory accommodation for clerical workers at Dartmoor Prison.

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. W. F. Deedes)

It is proposed, in the next financial year, to convert part of the hospital block to replace the present stores and pay office. Meantime, work has started on lavatories for the women staff.

Mr. Hayman

While thanking the Under-Secretary for that reply may I point out that a report which appeared recently in the Western Morning News disclosed that conditions for clerical workers are deplorable?

Mr. Deedes

That report appeared before the decision was taken which I have just announced.
