HC Deb 17 April 1956 vol 551 c843
34. Dr. Stross

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make a further statement on the possibility of preserving the tower and facade of the Imperial Institute.

Mr. H. Brooke

I cannot at present add to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member on 15th March. Discussions are proceeding between the Architect of the London County Council, which is the planning authority, and the College authorities and their architects.

Dr. Stross

May I thank the right hon. Gentleman for that reply, in view of the fact that the subject is obviously not closed and that consideration has been given to this very important matter? Will he bear in mind that many of us in all parts of the House in no way disagree about the importance of scientific education, but we are very anxious indeed to see that something should be done to retain this building?

Mr. Brooke

I cannot add anything at the moment. The London County Council is the planning authority, and these discussions are proceeding.
