HC Deb 12 April 1956 vol 551 cc367-8
11. Mr. Page

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what organised suggestion scheme is in operation in his Department; how many suggestions are received from employees through that organisation annually; how many are adopted; what awards are made for such suggestions; and what he estimates to be the savings made by the adoption of employees' suggestions.

Mr. Amory

All members of my Department are encouraged to put forward suggestions for improving efficiency. About 100 suggestions are received annually and an average of about 15 per cent. are adopted. Credit is given on personal files for any suggestion found suitable for adoption and monetary awards are made where appropriate.

Many of the suggestions adopted undoubtedly make for economy but no estimate has been made of the amount.

Mr. Page

Will my right hon. Friend look into this matter a little further? Is his Department doing as well as some of the other Departments with suggestions schemes or even as well as some of the commercial firms who have organised suggestions schemes?

Mr. Amory

I will certainly do as my hon. Friend asks. I am anxious that this scheme should be a success. Perhaps the explanation is that my Department is already unusually efficient.
