HC Deb 12 April 1956 vol 551 cc377-8
26. Mr. Snow

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will state the reasons for his Department's objection to the proposal to establish a nuclear power station in the estuary area of the rivers Crouch and Roach.

Mr. Amory

I understand from my right hon. Friend the Minister of Fuel and Power that he has received no proposal from the Central Electricity Authority for the establishment of a nuclear power station in the area referred to by the hon. Member.

Mr. Snow

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that an official of his Department is widely believed in the area to have made the strongest representations within his Department for transmission to the Minister of Fuel and Power that there should be no power station in that area because of the existence there of oyster beds? Is this not very surprising, in view of the Government's decision to allow the erection of a power station in an adjoining area where there are also oyster beds?

Mr. Amory

I have no doubt that if and when a proposal is made to the Minister of Fuel and Power, my right hon. Friend will consult me on these matters.
