HC Deb 12 April 1956 vol 551 cc373-4
19. Mr. B. Harrison

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is satisfied that there are adequate supplies of nitrogenous fertiliser available in the United Kingdom for use in the next few months; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Amory

Yes, Sir. There are always local difficulties in obtaining supplies during the peak period of spring applications, and because demand is at a record level these are more frequent than usual this season. Home production together with imports should, however, be enough to meet all requirements before the end of the season.

Mr. Harrison

Does my right hon. Friend regard the current difficulties of farmers in getting nitrogenous fertilisers as an indication that they have answered the call to improve grasslands in yield per acre?

Mr. Amory

Yes, gladly. I am delighted that the use of fertilisers in general and of nitrogenous fertilisers in particular is running at an all-time record level. I am very anxious indeed to see the new manufacturing capacity, which, I understand, has been put in hand for the making of fertilisers, in use at the earliest possible moment.
