HC Deb 11 April 1956 vol 551 cc193-4
24. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he has now decided to increase the speed limit in the London area.

Mr. Watkinson

I have nothing as yet to add to the answers which I gave to Questions on this subject by the hon. and gallant Member and the hon. Member for Enfield, East (Mr. Ernest Davies) on 21st March.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Does the Minister think it worth while, for the sake of saving a few seconds on a journey, to increase the danger to life and limb in the London area? Surely he cannot want the accident rate to go up as fast as the cost of living?

Mr. Watkinson

I think the hon. and gallant Member had better read the Report and then he will see what it is all about.

Mr. Callaghan

Does not the right hon. Gentleman agree that he can increase the speed limit in the centre of London as much as he likes, but none of us will be able to go any faster.
