HC Deb 11 April 1956 vol 551 cc191-2
6. Mr. Bowles

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what steps he will take to ensure greater road safety for the children of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic School, Coton Road, Nuneaton.

Mr. Molson

The best safeguard for schoolchildren is an adult patrol, and I understand the provision of one is now being considered.

Mr. Bowles

What powers has the Parliamentary Secretary's right hon. Friend to compel a local authority or local road safety committee to take steps if, in the opinion of the Minister, they should be taken?

Mr. Molson

My right hon. Friend has no powers in this matter. It is the Home Secretary who is responsible for the general administration of the Act. The initiative lies with the county council which, I believe, is considering the matter, and the police are in favour of the provision of a patrol.
