HC Deb 24 November 1955 vol 546 cc1646-7
38. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Minister of Labour the approximate number of honours graduates in science and mathematics who will be given deferment from National Service when they take up teaching in the session 1955–56.

Sir W. Monckton

The arrangements come into effect in January next, and the numbers deferred during 1956 are expected to be between 50 and 100.

Mr. Johnson

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware that the deferment of science men is causing a lot of feeling on the arts side of school staffs, who consider it unfair? Is this not one further argument for the abolition of the call-up?

Sir W. Monckton

It would be a very small one, because the figures for this deferment for any special case are so limited.
