HC Deb 24 November 1955 vol 546 cc1631-2
15. Mr. John Hall

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what progress has been made in his experiments designed to produce a satisfactory concentrated beer.

Mr. Amory

Practical trials have been made on equipment which could be incorporated in the design of plant for beer concentration, and studies of the storage characteristics of the concentrates have been continued.

Mr. Hall

Will my right hon. Friend ensure in these experiments that we do not lose sight of the fact that we want concentrated beer which tastes like beer?

Mr. Amory

There are times, when I have very difficult questions to answer, when I feel that I should be much stimulated by some concentrated beer. I understand that the only trouble is that in certain cases the concentrated beer is liable to develop old ale and caramel flavours, with which hon. Members may be more familiar than I am.

Mr. G. Thomas

How much money has been spent on these experiments?

Mr. Amory

I am afraid I cannot answer that question without notice. The object of the experiments was largely to see whether beer could be concentrated for convenience of transit to troops in overseas theatres of operation.
