HC Deb 24 November 1955 vol 546 cc1634-5
19. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food the amount of bacon and ham imported this year, to the latest available date; and the corresponding figure for 1954.

Mr. Amory

Between January and October this year 269,000 tons have been imported; the corresponding figure for 1954 was 266,000 tons.

Mr. Willey

Will the right hon. Gentleman watch this position carefully to see that we get the maximum imports? It is disturbing that we are losing supplies from the Commonwealth, because the present retail price is far too high and we must have the maximum imports. Home production is falling.

Mr. Amory

The first-hand price of bacon is moving downwards at present.
