HC Deb 22 November 1955 vol 546 c1239
4. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Secretary of State for War if he will make a statement on the policy adopted with regard to leave for men who desire reasonable facilities for leave to enable them to participate in pre-enlistment activities.

Mr. F. Maclean

Army duties permitting, commanding officers try to be helpful.

Mr. Smith

That is not very satisfactory. While I am not asking for preferential treatment, I would ask for fair treatment, and if the Minister cannot give a proper answer today, will he reconsider the matter with a view to trying to give some satisfaction?

Mr. Maclean

I do not see that we can say more than has been said, that where Army duties permit, commanding officers try to be helpful. That is a perfectly satisfactory answer.
