HC Deb 16 November 1955 vol 546 c386
5. Mr. Hayman

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air what action he proposes to take in reply to the protest against the siting of a steel radio tower for his Department within the Dartmoor National Park.

Mr. Ward

The Air Ministry proposals for the replacement of the radar mast at Sharpitor have been discussed informally with the local authorities and the interested amenity organisations. We are now re-examining our plans to see how far they can be modified to meet the objections which were put forward.

Mr. Hayman

Will the Minister bear in mind that the Dartmoor National Park is a most precious heritage of the nation, that Great Links Tor, where it has been proposed to site this mast, is one of the few wild tracts left in the West of England? Will the hon. Gentleman consult an eminent person outside the Service, such as Sir Robert Watson-Watt, before he makes an irrevocable decision?

Mr. Ward

I think that everyone interested in this matter has had, and will continue to have, every opportunity of putting forward points of view.
