HC Deb 15 November 1955 vol 546 c169
1. Mr. J Rodgers

asked the Minister of Works when he hopes to have the new litter baskets in sufficient quantities for use in Green Park and Hyde Park, and those parts of St. James's Park, such as the north side of the Mall, which are as yet without the new litter baskets.

The Minister of Works (Mr. Nigel Birch)

I hope to complete the provision of the new litter baskets in St. James's Park within the next few weeks and also to provide about sixty in Hyde Park, parts of Regent's Park and Grosvenor Square. I propose to provide for a further instalment of new baskets next year.

Mr. Rodgers

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that reply, and congratulating his Department on its progress in the matter, may I ask him to bear in mind that tests prove that the public are not willing to cross the road to find a litter basket, and that it is therefore important to have an adequate number of these baskets on both sides of the Mall?

Mr. Birch

We are doing that. I should like once again to express my thanks to my hon. Friend for the work he did in designing these baskets. They are very popular.
