HC Deb 10 November 1955 vol 545 c2005
45. Mr. Teeling

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the official pronouncement made by the Archbishop of Malta in the Cathedral at Valetta, particulars of which have been sent him by the hon. Member for Brighton, Pavilion, he will give an assurance that Her Majesty's Government will retain the position of authority at present enjoyed by the Roman Catholic Church in Malta, and that they will take notice of recent feeling in the island on this matter.

The Prime Minister (Sir Anthony Eden)

I do not think that it is for me to comment on what the Archbishop said in a sermon in the Cathedral at Valetta; but the present Constitution of Malta guarantees liberty of conscience for all persons. My hon. Friend can be assured that Her Majesty's Government will take no action to prejudice the position of the Roman Catholic Church in Malta.

Mr. Teeling

Does my right hon. Friend realise how much satisfaction that answer will give to Roman Catholics both in this country and in Malta?
