HC Deb 09 November 1955 vol 545 cc1844-5
39. Mr. Ernest Davies

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what progress has been made with the planning of the electrification of the Liverpool Street to Enfield Town line; and when it is anticipated work will begin.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I am informed by the British Transport Commission that a scheme for this work has now been approved in principle and that detailed planning is well advanced. It is, however, still too early to state when work is likely to begin.

Mr. Davies

Is the Minister aware that a statement was made to the local council at Enfield that the work would begin next year? Can he confirm that there is a likelihood that the work will begin next year?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I should prefer not to anticipate the Commission's two-yearly forecast of work to be done, the next edition of which will be issued early next year.

Mr. Davies

Can the Minister give an assurance that the work will not be held up by the present Government's restriction on national expenditure?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I would rather ask the hon. Gentleman to await the forecast which the Commission will issue.
